MISD Agrees to Phase Out 5 Sugary Breakfast Items

We have real progress to report! Beginning in April, MISD will phase out the following five breakfast items:

  • Blueberry Muffin
  • Banana Chocolate Bar
  • Cereal Bars
  • Strawberry Banana Smoothie w/ Goldfish Graham Crackers
  • Fruit Juice

These items frequently appear on the elementary menu, and many contain 45–52 grams of carbohydrates per serving, essentially dessert-level sugar, first thing in the morning.

This change happened because parents spoke up. That matters.

The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines now clearly call for reducing highly processed foods and added sugars. School breakfast should reflect that. Many ultra-processed options still remain on the menu:

  • Sugary cereals
  • Yogurt with graham crackers
  • Pancake & sausage on a stick
  • Buttery maple waffles

The district’s own long-term plan acknowledges the need to move away from processed foods. We support that goal, but we believe change must happen faster.

Five items down. We keep going. For our kids.
